How long have you been pescatarian? And what inspired your journey?

I’ve been a pescatarian for over 2 months now. I always wanted to try some form of not eating meat but never had the will power until I had some bacon that made me sick…it jump started [my journey].

Has  pescatarianism enhanced your health? Why or why not?

I’m 40 years old and it has. I have more energy [plus] my blood pressure is at a stable rate. I also [took off some] inches and my weight is slowly but surely going down! Thumbs up!

In retrospect, how do you feel about meat? Or do you have any thoughts on America’s meat industry?

I watched an episode on TV regarding the meat industry..and I’m glad that I’ve taken a step out of that club. I’m not against anyone that likes meat but it’s not for me anymore.

Was there a community of black women that helped you along your meatless journey? And if not, what are you doing to change this for others?

My mom, 67, and grandmother, 83, championed my change. [They] were both raised in the South [and] have eaten meat all of their lives. They have both modified the ingredients in certain foods [that] they cook. For example, collard greens, they would add smoke neck bone, [but they] no longer do it. They are both changing their eating habits… I find that to be the best thing in becoming a pescatarian…I’m hoping that other people will join me in eating better.

It’s nice to know that more African American women are taking care of their health, through education and awareness. Keep up the good work and keep motivating others.
