As the tragic story of Trayvon Martin picks up steam, Skittles has (unintentionally) taken on the role of brand representative for a movement.
Wearing hoodies, carrying bags of Skittles and cans of ice tea in honor of dead teen Trayvon Martin, thousands of people have gathered in New York City’s Union Square.
Similar rallies were simultaneously held in Miami’s Liberty City and in Sanford.
According to reports, demonstrators chanted “we want arrests” during Wednesday night’s Million Hoodie March
Calls for the firing of Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee were met with standing ovations at an NAACP meeting here aimed at addressing outrage over the killing of Trayvon, 17. The unarmed youth was shot Feb. 26 as he was returning to a gated community in the city after buying candy at a convenience store.
The gunman, neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, has not been charged in the shooting and has said he shot the teen in self-defense. Zimmerman had been following the youth on foot and had called the police department to report possible suspicious behavior, but he said he lost sight of Martin and was returning to his truck when he was violently attacked.
Police said Zimmerman is white; his family says he is Hispanic.
“Any police chief who has so mishandled a situation like this has to go,” NAACP national head Benjamin Todd Jealous said. “We will ensure that justice is carried out here in Sanford.”
The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights probe into the shooting.
The teenager’s father, Tracy Martin, told the marchers the family won’t stop until it gets “justice.”
Can’t make it to the Rally? Some folks have sent an empty bag of skittles to the police chief to get across a “subtle” message.

An easy way to participate and be heard. Imagine them opening thousands and thousands of bags of skittles. Just buy one or as many as you want. Fill your candy dish (empty the bag) and mail the packages to Mr. Lee.
