Drinking in the sun is one of the worst activities to do unless one is enjoying wine. At least that’s what Gawker claims about the popular adult beverage after a study linked substances in grapes with protection from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

According to the study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a research team unlocked the hidden flavonoids in grapes that help protect skin from breaking down, which can lead to skin issues such as sunburn and cancer.

The Telegraph said the study will help scientists and corporations come up with creams and other products that aide in skin protection as well as pushing the “fruit of gods” into all diets, not just the Mediterranean.

Marta Cascante, a biochemist at the University of Barcelona and director of the research project, says that her team found some great information that will help people be as healthy on the inside as Italians look on the outside:

“This study supports the idea of using these products to protect the skin from cell damage and death caused by solar radiation, as well as increasing our understanding of the mechanism by which they act”, she said.

Now let’s not run out and drink all the wine we can get our hands, especially considering reports that wine producers tell small lies on their bottle labels in regards to the alcohol content. Undoubtedly, the occasional glass of wine is OK, but if one really wants to thrive, bike-on-over to the local farmer’s market and pick up a bag of seeded grapes (non-hybrid, all other seedless grapes are hybrids) and enjoy!
