Just those words alone have been the subject of heated debates all over the country. On more than one season of VH1’s Basketball Wives, Tami Roman was stewing over the comments that both Jennifer Williams and Suzie Ketchem made to her about food stamps. Just last year, a mom in Texas killed both herself and her children after being denied them from the welfare office. Even President Obama has had to take heat from politicians who negatively labeled him the “greatest food stamp President in history.”
Yet even after it’s been proven that 1 in every 7 Americans receives food stamps, it’s still stirs up the same feelings in many women: shame, anger, and disappointment.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, as of February 2012, there were over 46 million US recipients of food stamps.
That’s quite a number.
Were you, or do you know anyone who was ever been ashamed to be on food stamps?
Check out the video of the infamous food stamp fight on Basketball Wives:
I look at it like this multi billion dollars companies have no problem getting tax exemptions and are able to keep 100% of there profits through government loop holes. They are unapologetic about it and continue to lobby to make they get their tax breaks. Therefore I have no problem getting govt assistance since I actually do pay into the system. No one called the big banks “welfare queens” so please tell me if it’s ok to take billions of dollars, why can’t the average person take a couple thousand?
Yes I would be ashamed and so would everyone else who wants to provide, male or female, for one’s family. But to keep one thousand, it should be more of an embarrassment on the government and private industry. A limited liability company is able to do business in whatever county or state or country in order to provide a common good service to the community it resides in. The fact that most of these corporations out source jobs without a thought to the economy shows the failure to live up to that contract. And the government is spineless so it will never step in and provide supplemental jobs that are lasting legacy that help people not need assistance.
Absolutely not. Why should I feel guilty over the mere pittance I get when billionaires and billion dollar companies refuse to provide living wages and benefits to employees? Why should I feel bad when Walmart gets massive tax breaks, the owners are some of the wealthiest people in the world, and yet their employees who get paid terribly qualify for food stamps and medicaid programs?
Who should be feelign shame there? The employee trying to make a living or the owners for their greed, and teh government for allowing it to continue?
As for my personal situation… I am disabled, a single mom, and below the poverty line. That’s right, my income from disability leaves me below the poverty line. So i am not exaggerating when I say I need food stamps. I am not taking advantage or abusing anything. However, in my state 100 elected officials, senators and representatives who are committee chairs get $9,000+ in stipends for food and travel every year. that is abuse! That’s more than half of my yearly ssdi income. My state spends almost 2 million dollars total a year for these stipends for all officials. These officials make 60k+ a year, plus have great insurance, pensions, and now almost 10k in stipends. and i should ashamed of needing food stamps? puh-leaze. oh and if anyone was curious… i get a whopping $18.00 a month for food stamps.
Would I want to HAVE to be on food stamps? No. But would I be ashamed if I were on them? No. I would take government assistance to take care of my family if I needed to. Being on food stamps is not a goal of mine and neither is having a starving family. Do what you need to do for the time being.
A lot of people in college use them.. I am against them because I feel as though I am too young to depend on the system. At this age I need to get a job and work hard for what I need and want before I just depend on the government to take care of me. If I get used to depending on the system I will never know how to feed myself or manage my money.
