The biggest game in football is only a few days away! Super Bowl Sunday is a huge time for sports fans, it is also one of the biggest calorie-fests of the year for many Americans. The average football fan eats about a day’s worth of calories during the game, and the U.S. Calorie Control Council estimates that Americans pack away 11 million pounds of chips on Super Bowl Sunday. Just because the big game is on doesn’t mean your diet has to be off. Here are four healthy dishes to make for game day that are sure to be a touchdown for your diet.
Lemon-Drop Chicken Wings
On Super Bowl weekend, Americans are expected to eat 1.25 billion chicken wings — that’s 100 million pounds — according to a new report by the National Chicken Council. Most of those wings are going to be fried and drenched with calorie consuming barbeque and hot sauce. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Lemon-Drop wings are a great way to retain that tangy flavor without the hefty weight gain. These spiked wings have a tangy lemon taste and are baked, not fried.
Mini Turkey Burgers With Gorgonzola
Instead of stuffing your face with oversized beef burgers, try these mini turkey burgers on for size. Not only is the portion size smaller than your usual burger, but turkey meat is packed with protein and leaner than ground beef so you’ll be consuming less fat.
Smoky Chicken Fingers With Honey Mustard Dip
Love the lemon wings but still craving something with a crunch? Then these smoky chicken fingers are sure to be right up your alley. Baking these chicken strips keeps the fat low, but the seasoning and bread crumbs create a faux-fried texture that you’ll love.
Fudgy Chocolate Brownies
Yea we know, fudge and healthy aren’t usually in the same sentence, but no game day would be complete without a sweet treat. Unsweetened cocoa keeps the fat content low on these decadent brownies and are the perfect comfort food to have around just in case your team loses.
What healthy Super Bowl foods are you cooking up?
I’m doing mini baked crab cakes (Maryland style with lots of Old Bay), baked Thai chili lime wings, vegan chili (for my non-meat eaters), a baked french fry trio of butternut squash with purple and white potatoes, and 2 healthy dips (Texas Caviar and African style lentil). Dang, that sounds like a lot!
