Why are Kenyans such great marathoners? The Guardian sent cameras down to the former British colony to film a chat between Adharanand Finn, author of Running with Kenyans, and upstart Kenyan athlete Boniface Kiprop Kongin and his manager, Tom Payn, both of whom shared their feeling on Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running.
Despite the seemingly anecdotal tone of both Kongin and Payn, they opined that there were several foundational reasons for Kenyan’s preponderance of distance dominance, all of which could be backed up with scientific studies.
