Living in Los Angeles, as a vegan, I definitely count myself spoiled by the city. This is a very veg-friendly town where many delicious options abound. If you’re native to the L.A. area, you might agree that most of the veggie havens are located north of Pico Blvd. or are further south in the beach cities of Redondo, Manhattan, and Long Beach.

Luckily, one advantageous entrepreneur decided that it was worth the risk to open a health food joint in the heart of black Los Angeles. Simply Wholesome is a health food restaurant and convenience store, which is not strictly vegan. Surprisingly, this is one of the reasons why I love it! My first experience at this restaurant was years ago in my pre-vegan days. The South-L.A. staple serves up good and healthy dishes that anyone can be satisfied by — which means, if you are a vegan dining with non-vegans, there is something on the menu for everyone. Hence, with a vast array of different dishes, this also makes the 5,000 square-foot historic plaza a great place to frequent if you are transitioning into a vegan lifestyle.

Whenever I’m nearby the restaurant, I try to make it a point to stop in, especially when I’m on my way out of town. It’s not too far from LAX, so I often step in to grab vegan grub for the airplane. So, I wanted to take a closer look at Simply Wholesome and speak to the owner about what made him open the restaurant and store and discuss how the landscape of healthy living and eating has transformed over the years since he’s been in business. Now, without further ado, please meet Percell Keeling!

  1. Best spot in LA for veggie tacos. Period

  2. Vegetarian means to eat nothing from a dead animal…fish doesn´t grow on trees.

I wonder if people simply assume fish is a vegetable or if they don´t know what vegetarian means.

  3. I have eaten here for the past 20 years. Always excellent food and good service.
