Two years ago Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer research organization partnered with KFC for the fight against breast cancer. Buckets of fried chicken were garnished with pink ribbons and sold to the winner with the biggest appetite. In the campaign’s first week alone, over $2 million dollars were raised.

This was the classic example of pink promotion for breast cancer research having stepped out of bounds  in haphazard marketing campaigns leading supporters of the “cure” astray. Countless products were added to the roster of breast cancer research pink washing including Campbell’s chicken noodle soup which uses cans lined with the chemical BPA and Yoplait yogurt which contains a recombinant growth hormone which could negatively impact health and potentially lead to cancer.

Pink washing and endless end-of-counter donation displays when you go to buy your groceries aside, it’s time to look towards alternative lifestyle practices that will prevent the disease before it even has a chance to grow legs and walk.
