Oprah Winfrey recently spoke at a convention in Los Angeles about the future of her Harpo brands and the OWN Network. Although many of her adoring fans have witnessed the Queen of Talk’s battle with weight during her 25-year reign on daytime television, many were surprised to hear that she had waged swords with an even scarier health mammoth: cancer.
A New York Times profile reports that the aging 58-year-old told her best friend Gayle King that she had had a breast cancer scare last week. The examination resulted in a false alarm.
Although Winfrey is okay, King was apparently emotionally disturbed by the news. So much so that a woman in the audience who noticed King’s disposition berated Winfrey for not informing her close friend about her health issues and suggested that she apologize to her in front of everyone.
Very insensitive!..to all women who deal with this dreaded disease.
While I am happy to hear that Oprah does not have breast cancer, I hope her scare encourages all women to remain vigilant. As we know, finding breast cancer early greatly improves a woman’s chances for successful treatment.
