Several clinical studies have been conducted to assess the validity of MUFAs in the battle against the bulge, and the research is positive. According to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, people who consumed an abundance of MUFAs lost both weight and body fat — without reducing their caloric intake levels. Another study, published in Diabetes Care, found that eating a MUFA-rich diet prevented the accumulation of fat around the belly. Yet another study indicates that eating a MUFA-rich breakfast caused study participants to lose weight for up to five hours after their meals.
