In the history of television doctors, Dr. Drew Pinksy is s regular known face. Often promoting healthier and happier lifestyles, the doctor motivates his clients to become better rounded within their relationships and friendships on shows like Celebrity Rehab, and LifeChangers.

But now the doc has come under scrutiny for allegedly taking money — 275,000 dollars to be exact — from the pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline, for the new antidepressant, Wellbutrin, for uses that were not approved by the FDA. Wellbrutin, was approved by to treat depression, and other conditions including obesity, addictions and sexual dysfunction.

Dr. Drew was accused of promoting the drug on his radio talk show, LoveLine, in 1999 for uses other than what they were intended. He explained to one woman that it may be the reason for increased sexual arousal after she was able to have 60 plus orgasms in one night.

Though it’s common for doctors to promote FDA approved drugs, it is both illegal and unethical to promote them for anything other than their intended use.

He defends his comments in a statement to Forbes,

“In the late 90s I was hired to participate in a 2 year initiative discussing intimacy and depression which was funded by an educational grant by Glaxo Wellcome. Services for the non branded campaign included town hall meetings, writings and multimedia activities in conjunction with the patient advocacy group the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association. My comments were consistent with my clinical experience. “
