Have you been watching your blood pressure?

This month is hypertension awareness month when people are encouraged to head to the doctor to get tested for high blood pressure – a condition that affects one out of every three Americans. If you or anyone in your family has high blood pressure, here are some things that could help:

  1. Eat low sodium meals – An excessive amount of salt in our diet has lead to an increase in blood pressure for a growing amount of Americans. As a way to combat this, try eating low sodium meals regularly.
  2. Watch your Weight – People who are overweight and obese have a higher risk of hypertension because of a potential increase in insulin in your blood, which can lead to Diabetes. Similarly, obesity comes along with vitamin deficiency. So it’s best to maintain an active lifestyle that will counteract the likelihood of other symptoms.
  3. Don’t Stress – If you find yourself getting sick regularly, or having reoccurring headaches at an alarming rate, it’s possible that stress is getting the worst of you. Make sure to take some time out for yourself to regroup, get your thoughts together, and don’t let challenges stand in your way. Stress will keep your blood pressure up, something you just don’t want.
