Making it’s way into the long list of diet regimens is something you may enjoy much more than a Master Cleanse, and you can do it with much of what you keep in your refrigerators.

Juice.

Or rather, the juice diet.

It consists of replacing any type of food that you consume regularly with fresh fruit and/or vegetable juice. Similar to that of the Master Cleanse, you shed pounds quickly. Unlike the Master Cleanse — which is primarily a water, lemon, and cayenne pepper diet — you’re drinking something a bit more tastier.

The diet has been endorsed by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Sarah Jessica Parker. But like most diets, this one offers mixed results.

According to Dr. Madelyn Fernstom, TODAY’s diet and nutrition editor, there are cautionary tales to juice diets, just as quickly as you put off the weight, it may come back:

“With weight loss, when it comes off quickly, it comes back on quickly,” she says. “If you stay under 1,000 calories a day with liquids or solids, you’ll lose weight at the same rate.”

She also mentions that a diet of only juice can not only have you running to the bathroom every few hours, but also cause a decline in muscle mass.

But there are benefits as well,

“No one eats enough fruits and vegetables and one way to get them is to drink them. One glass of fruit juice has the calories of two pieces of whole fruit.”

Hmm. Reminds me of my V-8 days.

Would you try a juice diet? Do you think it could be better than other diets on the market?

  1. I think juice fasting or feasting is a therapeutic measure available to some people. It is neither as simple nor as easy as it sounds and is harmful for a number of people. It requires getting all of calories through juicing, is best using organic produce and requires careful supplementation if done for more than a week or two. Some folks blood sugars will soar iunder this process and most people would do well to include more veggies than fruits. Many people have succeeded in altering their very obese bodies through working through and monitoring a juice fast. However, you still must learn how to eat properly once you come away from that rarified situation. Otherwise your old habits will swell you right back up again. I am considering it,as the middle leg of an overhaul of my health and diet but I’m taking it slowly and doing the research, it takes time, caution and knowledge. Check out the success of Phillip McKluskey and Angela Stokes Monarch as well as the film Fat Sick and Nearly Dead.Remarkable healing can come from juicing

  2. I like juice fasting. It makes my eyes and skin glow. It really is therapeutic and should not be done simply for weight loss, but for health reasons. Best to juice truly organic veggies and use distilled water.

  3. I am interested in trying it for health and weight loss reasons. I realize its not a quick fix and I definitely don’t want to lose muscle mass. I think juicing daily is a great alternative to eating fruits and I’ve seen my health improve. But can we drink just juice after weight loss? Of course not. Eating right and including juice plus exercise is the way to lose it and keep it off. People just don’t want to accept that.

  4. Juice fasting has many benefits. It is a regular part of our natural healing programs. It is important that you use the time to prepare yourself for a NEW way of feeding yourself. If you go back to eating as usual, the same problems will return. The following comes from our website at Opare Integrative Health Care:

Juice Fasting can be a powerful healing tool. During the fast the body is able to release and eliminate the accumulated toxins from our diets, our addictions, and our environments. Once these toxins are removed, the body is able to work to return to it’s natural healthy state. When combined with self observation and reflection, journaling, prayer/meditation, education and a commitment to making changes, the fasting process provides an opportunity for making profound changes in your emotional, spiritual and physical health. A juice fast is an important step in making dietary changes, allowing old patterns and habits to be broken, and new habits and tastes to develop. When your fast is over you are ready to begin your new pattern of food consumption and your new life!
