As the unthinkable Trayvon Martin tragedy continues to unfold, the Skittles bag the 17-year-old boy held throughout his untimely death has taken on national significance. Martin, who was gunned down by neighborhood watchmen George Zimmerman, who claimed he acted in self-defense, was also holding an Arizona ice-tea.

From sending empty bags to the Sanford Police Chief, Bill Lee, to holding up Skittles bags in protest, the Skittles brand is in the national consciousness in way no one ever would have anticipated.

Many folks have wondered what Skittles had to say considering protesters are purchasing bags of Skittles to show their solidarity with the slain teenager. In a statement published on Hello Beautiful, a spokeswoman for Skittles said:

We are deeply saddened by the news of Trayvon Martin’s death and express our sincere condolences to his family and friends. We also respect their privacy and feel it inappropriate to get involved or comment further as we would never wish for our actions to be perceived as an attempt of commercial gain following this tragedy.”

This is all people wanted and excepted from a brand beloved by people across races, ethnicities, and ages. Well done …

  7. While I appreciate the fact that they kept it appropriate, I would hope that behind the scenes, just as quietly, they will work with the family and donate a portion of the extra March profits to court costs or a trust or something…
