Weight. It’s a touchy subject for almost everyone. Whether you’re slim, obese or somewhere in between, size may matter…but no one really wants to talk about it. You definitely don’t want to talk about someone else’s weight, especially if you don’t know them, and designer Karl Lagerfeld learned that lesson this week. The fashion divo put his foot in his mouth this week when he dropped the F-bomb when talking about singer Adele.

Lagerfeld was quoted as saying:

“The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.”

Um, excuse me?

It’s never a good idea to call someone fat, even if technically they are. It’s too touchy a subject and commands a bit of sensitivity, but what makes this such a faux pas is that Lagerfeld doesn’t personally know Adele well enough to comment on her weight to the entire world. Especially since Lagerfeld has struggled with weight himself. Pot calling the kettle black much?

Lagerfeld attempted to backpedal on his earlier statement by saying:

“I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought. What I said was in relation to Lana Del Rey and the sentence has since been taken out of context from how it was originally published. I actually prefer Adele, she is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.”

Words can hurt even more than a few extra pounds, so maybe next time Karl Lagerfeld should probably have a talk with his inner fat child before running off at the mouth about someone else, and offer support and advice instead of criticism.

  1. The thing is, what he said is true. She knows it, he knows it and everyone else knows it so why shouldn’t he be able to say it? I understand that it may hurt to hear, but the truth doesn’t always feel good. Honestly I’m kind of tired of everyone expecting everyone else to lie and/or hold back the truth so people can feel good about things that are not good. What he said is true, she’s a beautiful woman who is too fat who also happens to have an awesome voice.

I will add however that she’s a singer not a model, so on another note I don’t really understand why people are always bringing up her weight in the first place, it has nothing to do with what she does.

  2. ppl need to worry about their weight and stop worrying about somebody elses fat cells.
