It was the moment many (mainly women) had been waiting for. Neo-Soul crooner D’Angelo was back on the music scene after being out of the spotlight for a number of years. During his hiatus the singer who once made women everywhere cream was arrested and charged on different occasions with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated and solicitation, he also gained weight … a lot of it.

D’Angelo, the man with the cut and chiseled body of an Adonis was no a two Big Macs past chubster and fans couldn’t imagine him ever getting anywhere close to his former body ever again. However, when D’Angelo stepped on stage in Stockholm, Sweden, not only did he prove that he still had his vocal abilities, he proved that he still had his body as well. Gone was most of the flab and the muscles we all know and love had reemerged.

Fans everywhere rejoiced.

But would they have been as happy about his return if D’Angelo had showed up on stage with the extra weight?

When actress Octavia Spencer was interviewed recently after her Golden Globes win she told reporters that she felt her weight could make her less valuable in Hollywood:

“I am not healthy at this weight. Any time you have too much around the middle, then there is a problem. [And] when you reach a certain weight, you are less valuable.”

Hollywood is not the only place that places pressure on celebs to stay in shape in order to keep their jobs, the music industry is notorious for expecting women to be bootylicious and men to look like 6-pack having Gods at all times.

D’Angelo is talented no doubt about it, but for the fans that knew him at his peak anything less than the man in the ‘How Does It Feel’ video just will not do and to gain the attention of new fans you have to be at the top of your game, so if it’s safe to say D’Angelo may have been persona non grata if he would’ve come back on the scene looking like the black Santa Claus. Fair? No. Reality? Yes.

Do you think D’Angelo’s comeback would be great even with the extra weight?

  1. UNEQUIVOCAL NO! D’angelo is a beautiful man that made his name in music with his soulful crooning and banging body. Although there are plenty of heavy men throughout the ages that have made great music and women have the loved them all the same, i.e. Luther, Heavy D, and Gerald Levert, D’angelo’s fame exploded after he made the video for “Untitled,” profiling his god-like chisels. Thus, it would be hard for him to shake those images from his fans. He did it to himself

  2. Personally, if someone makes good, soulful music, it transcends anything earthly like weight or beauty. Rock on D’Angelo, Rock On!

  3. The vocals are what matter most. That sexy body is just a much appreciated bonus.
