One of the first things you hear about when you decide to start getting healthy is a chorus of “death to carbs!” No bread, no pasta, no bagels with butter and jelly … no, no, no, and no is all you hear when it comes to dieting and carbs. Of course, not all carbs are created equally. Sure there are “bad” carbs like doughnuts, cakes, and refined white breads, but there are also healthy carbs that can help you to lose weight because they’re generally rich in fiber like vegetables, fruits, and whole or multi-grains. Here are four carbs that are diet friendly … and yummy too!

Whole Wheat Pasta

If you’re anything like me you can’t get enough of pasta! When the craving strikes cook up some whole-wheat pasta which offers two to three times more fiber than refined white varieties, but they’re just as versatile and delicious. Similarly, whole-wheat bread and brown rice are healthier choices than their “white” counterparts.

Quinoa

If you love couscous then you’ll love quinoa. A delicately flavored whole grain, it provides some fiber (two grams per half-cup) and a good amount of protein which can help you feel full for longer.

Wheat Berries

Never heard of wheat berries before? Don’t worry you’re not alone. These are the whole, unprocessed kernels of wheat. They’re terrific sources of B vitamins, iron, magnesium, zinc and yes, fiber. Just simmer for about an hour until tender, add some of your favorite veggies or proteins and dinner is served!

Popcorn

Just because you’re eating healthy doesn’t mean you can’t have a snack. Instead of reaching for sweets grab a bowl of popcorn instead. Popcorn satisfies a snack craving and it’s a whole grain. Three cups of popped popcorn equals one of your three recommended daily servings of whole grains and contains three grams of fiber.
