According to the Los Angeles Times, an HIV activist group wants to require pornography productions to use condoms for sex. Basically, they want to kill the fantasy of inconsequential hook-up sex but keep the rape fantasies alive. Way to go!

The initiative would force any adult filmmaker who gets a permit to shoot in the city to require performers to use condoms and allow the city to charge a fee to pay for inspections of film sets, said Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which sponsored the signature drive and intends to fund the initiative campaign.

The severely cash-strapped city of Los Angeles would have to create a regulatory board with inspectors who would go to sets around the city, making sure actors and actresses were protected.

The Free Speech Coalition, which runs a porn performer STD database, opposes the measure, and suggests that if condoms were mandatory there may be less diligent testing in the industry. Director Diane Duke says:

“History has shown us that regulating sexual behavior between consenting adults does not work … The best way to prevent the transmission of HIV and other [sexually transmitted infections] is by providing quality information and sexual health services.

Most industries in America have regulations that aren’t enforced for reason or the other, so this is another piece of legislation that will make people feel good about themselves but amounts to putting a band-aid on a cut that requires stitches. All this will do is eventually shift production from the San Fernando Valley to overseas or another state. Anyone heard of the saying “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”
