According to many straitlaced NFL analyst, Stevie Johnson of the Buffalo Bills went over the line when he celebrated penetrating the end zone on Sunday by mocking Plaxico Burress’ unfortunate firearm mishap.

As you can see in this video, Johnson thought it would be fun to taunt Burress, who served 21 months in prison after he shot himself in the leg during a trip to a New York City nightclub. Johnson was flagged for excessive celebration although the actual mocking was not the problem, but it was the fact that he fell on the ground during his second celebration that drew the ref’s attention.

Some of the spectators, writers, and talking heads called for Johnson to be harshly reprimanded, forgetting that people love sports for the entertainment factor. Some of dances and celebration in general seem to give people a much needed break from the high-speed violence that occurs in between the boundaries.

Burress said that Johnson didn’t hurt his feelings, adding, “I’ve seen worse and I’ve heard worse, … It doesn’t bother me at all.”

Johnson later apologized for his touchdown celebration, placing his action at the center of why his team lost to the New York Jets 28-24:

“Most definitely, because it hurt our team,” Johnson replied when asked if he regretted his actions. “It was very stupid. I feel like I cost our team a win on that.”

It’s highly doubtful that Johnson’s actions, alone, caused the Buffalo Bills the victory yesterday, but no one accused him of not being a narcissist.

Sound-Off: What do you think? Do you think it’s okay to poke fun at another person’s misfortune?
