The FDA previously decided that all cigarettes sold in the U.S. must feature warning labels with graphic anti-smoking images to warn consumers of the grave health dangers associated with tobacco use. However, a District judge has granted a temporary injunction to keep the rules from going into place, citing that the tobacco companies will likely win their suit against the FDA, which claims that these warnings violate First Amendment rights.
Images such as that of a man exhaling smoke through a hole in his throat caused by years of tobacco use are featured on cigarette packages in at least 40 other countries, including Egypt.
