When it comes to looking and feeling good there is one enemy that men and women have in common … belly fat. You know, that unsightly bulge that can quickly turn a fab outfit to drab and send your confidence plummeting like the stock market. No matter weather you have a small pooch or a beer keg sized belly to get rid of, these three simple tips can help you live healthier, shrink your belly fat and bring your sexy back.

Eat Right

We’re not talking about drastic diets or going from carnivore to vegan overnight, we’re talking about making simple changes to your eating habits. Fill your belly with high-fiber, complex carbohydrates and try (hey we all have weak moments) to give up the highly refined simple carbs in your current diet, such as cakes, cookies, crackers, chips, white bread and candy. Eat more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans as your main source of carbs since these foods can help keep you feeling satisfied for hours after you eat them.

Put Down the Salt

Sodium makes you retain water, puffing up your belly and making it appear larger than it may actually be. Most of us eat more than twice as much sodium as we should–topping 3,400 mg a day, rather than the recommended 1,500 mg. When you’re shopping, be sure to check the label for the product’s sodium content and don’t add extra salt to your meals when eating out. This small step can not only help your stomach shrink a bit, but lowering your sodium intake is good for your heart to!

Exercise

You knew it was coming. As much as we may wish on stars and genies in hopes of a magic pill appearing that will solve all of our unwanted body issues, there is no way around it…you have to exercise! Eating healthy and watching your salt is great, but nothing can substitute a good old fashion workout. Run in an interval format to promote fat burning in your stomach, perform weight lifting exercises that require you to forcefully engage your stomach muscles for stability and do ab exercises to tighten and tone your stomach muscles. These workouts combined with the other simple tips will have your stomach beach ready in no time flat.

  1. Great article. I only wish that more people would listen to this advice. This is so simple but getting started is the key to reaping the benefits.

  2. I knew about eating right and exercising will help you get a flat stomach, but I didn’t know that sodium is a big cause for belly fat. I’m gonna check the labels for sodium more often.

  3. Thanks for sharing! Is there a difference between the sodium that is found in most processed and fast foods vs sea salt? I read in some place that there is a difference.

  4. This is a lifestyle. Also, I love the way I look in my clothes with a flatter belly.

  5. Very nice article, but the blogger may want to have someone proofread. Using the correct *whether & *too are pretty important!

  6. @Paris: Your comment was not necessary this is a positive post. Keep all negative comments to yourself. They probably caught their misspellings but because it’s not an english class decided not to correct it. It seems like there’s always someone to try and put down others. So sorry you had to be that one!
