Another day, another grocery store scare…

Taylor Farms Retail of California has issued a voluntary recall of over 3,200 cases of their bagged salad blend due to concerns that they may be tainted by salmonella. A random test on a package of spinach by the Washington State Department of Agriculture prompted this recall and there have been no illnesses reported to date, according to the FDA.

Potenitally contaminated salads were sold in grocery stores across  Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Puerto Rico; brands affected by the recall include Fresh Selections, H-E-B, Marketsie and Taylor Farms and have “best by” dates of between October 18 and 21.

Salmonella is a dangerous bacteria and one of the most common causes of food poisoning in the US; it is caused by a contamination of feces, usually the result of someone failing to wash their hands properly while handling food. It can trigger deadly infections in very young children, the elderly and persons with weak immune systems. Otherwise healthy people may experience fever, vomiting, stomach pains and bloody stools if infected.
