PETA has a reputation for using controversial and even offensive imagery to draw attention to their pro-animal causes (anyone recall the ads that compared the meat industry to American slavery?); for the last few years, they have relied heavily on sex to sell, creating campaigns that featured celebs such as Angela Simmons and Waka Flocka Flame going nude to oppose wearing fur (the first one of these ads actually ran in 1991 and featured Pop group The Go-Gos), as well as ads suggesting that veggie eaters are sexier than carnivores.

NPR reports that the group is taking their efforts to new lows levels with a web domain that will feature adult content: PETA.XXX. Spokesperson Lindsay Rajt claims that the site won’t actually feature porn, but that the .XXX domain name is just another shock tactic used to bring attention to the organization.  “The nudity is just one tactic in our arsenal,” Rajt says. She would not elaborate on what the site may feature in addition to the already existing nudity campaigns.

PETA released “State of the Union Undressed” in 2008 and 2010 around the time of the Presidential State of the Union Address; the video featured a woman reciting the organization’s list of animal-rights accomplishments while taking her clothes off. Rajt says this was an effective marketing tool, because many people watched the entire clip “and a good number of them actually signed up for a vegetarian start-up kit.”

  1. PETA definitely thrives off of controversy. I’m so over it. They need to come up with something better to get people to become vegetarian or vegan. They’re just as bad as the people who exploit animals because now all they do is exploit people ( and mostly women at that). And I’m curious to know if these celebrities who are claiming to never wear fur again are actually vegan. Peace.
