Why would an animal right group be launching a pornography domain? Well, according to PETA, their new .xxx domain will is the latest in the organization’s efforts to raise awareness for animal cruelty.
The Huffington Post reports:
PETA confirmed the XXX site in a phone interview with The Huffington Post.
“We live in a 24 hour news cycle world and we learn the racy things we do are sometimes the most effective way that we can reach particular individuals,” said PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt.
….
So how pornographic will PETA go? According to Rajt, it will have enough adult content to qualify for the XXX domain site but also some other graphic images of animals that viewers may not expect to see.
Still not everyone is convinced that PETA’s latest effort. Chenda Ngak of CBS News points out that there is a big difference in portrayals of men and women on the site and wonders if peta.exxx will actually bring more awareness to the organization’s cause at all:
A quick browse through their print campaigns clearly shows the divide between men and women. Even men who are known for their nakedness, like Iggy Pop and Steve-O are clothed. However, most of the women are fully nude. Sorry, PETA, this move seems seriously misguided. After watching porn, no one wants to eat carrots and sign a petition. No one.
While PETA is right about today’s consumer being pulled a million directions, this campaign may do little to help direct attention to the cause at hand.
What do you think of PETA’s latest campaign? Is a porn sight attracting the right type of attention or is the shock value not worth the stunt? Weigh in Frugivores- tell us what you think!
Positively ridiculous. I think they are doing worst on the so called cause that they are attempting to represent! Sex really does not always have to be the “last resort”as they are making it out to be. And the fact that they are also willing to exploit women (and clearly not willing to take that same stretch with men) what really are they promoting. This is just straight foolishness and low level thinking on PETA’s part.
