How long have you been vegan? And what inspired your journey?
I’ve been vegan for 5 years and it is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life! I started my journey simply because I wanted to be healthier. I didn’t have any major health problems but I wanted to take control of my well-being and not leave my health in the hands of these hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. As my journey progressed I learned that a plant-based diet can prevent diseases, save our environment, prevent animal abuse and prevent factory worker exploitation. With all of this new found knowledge I never looked back and every day since I am inspired to continue my vegan lifestyle because I know in my heart I’m making a difference.
Has veganism enhanced your health? Why or why not?
Veganism has definitely enhanced my health. I rarely get sick, I have so much more energy and after eating my vegan meals I don’t get the “itis”. I also notice that my skin is clearer and I heal faster if I have a scratch or bruise. Overall I feel lighter and my mind is clear and open. I feel a deeper connection with the Earth.
In retrospect, how do you feel about meat? Or do you have any thoughts on America’s meat industry?
Animal flesh a.k.a. meat is just wrong to me. I definitely believe we take on the energy of what we put into our body and by eating meat we are taking in the negative energy of abused and exploited animals. One of my favorite quotes by Paul McCartney is “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian”. Plain and simple, the meat and dairy industries are disgusting. There is abuse on all levels, from the chickens and cows to the farm and factory workers. And by purchasing and eating this people are supporting this abuse.
Was there a community of black women that helped you along your meatless journey? And if not, what are you doing to change this for others?
Unfortunately, there was not a community of black women who helped me along the way. I knew one black vegan woman and I definitely looked to her for advice but I mainly supported myself by reading, watching documentaries and doing my own research. I am elated to see more black women writing books on veganism, such as Tracye McQuirter’s “By Any Greens Necessary” and A. Breeze Harper’s “Sistah Vegan”. It shows me that I am not alone.
I’m a Holistic Health Coach and I work with women who are struggling with becoming vegetarian/vegan. I help them by showing them how simple it is to transition to a plant-based lifestyle. With my company, Peace of Food Wellness™, I plan on making people happier and healthier while protecting the animals and our beautiful Earth.
