How long have you been pescatarian? And what inspired your journey?

I’ve been a pescatarian for 10 months. I helped my mother take care of my grandmother last year, literally up until the day she died. Watching my grandmother deteriorate and knowing that her ailments were a result of choices she made, inspired me to be proactive in regards to my health. I met my ex-girlfriend a few days before my grandmother passed and I learned that she was a pescatarian. Meeting her and the death of my grandmother was the final push that I needed to commit to a lifestyle that I had been contemplating adapting.

Has pescatarianism enhanced your health? Why or why not?

It has absolutely enhanced my health. One of the reasons why I decided to be meat free was because I had a cyst on my left ovary. I did a lot of research that insinuated that meat consumption may possibly play a role in cysts, fibroid tumors, and uncomfortable menstrual cycles. Earlier this week I found out that my cyst dissolved. I’m pretty sure that my new meatless journey had something to do with it.

Prior to becoming a pescatarian I had also gained a tremendous amount of weight. I was the biggest I had ever been in my entire life. I’m now 4 pants sizes smaller than I was the last time that I consumed meat.

In retrospect, how do you feel about meat? Or do you have any thoughts on America’s meat industry?

I feel like meat is overrated. I am also not a fan of the way animals are treated and disregarded within America’s meat industry.

Was there a community of black women that helped you along your meatless journey? And if not, what are you doing to change this for others?

There wasn’t necessarily a whole community of black women that helped me along the way. Besides my ex being inspiring and maybe one or two black women on Twitter it was just my own motivation that kept me steadfast. I plan on spreading my knowledge as much as possible. I’m always open to sharing my experiences and tips with whomever is curious about vegetarianism. I’m also truly interested in becoming an ambassador of healthy lifestyles for women of color. I have no problem in carrying the torch.

  1. I had a stomach tumor removed. Ask my doctor why me? He said the great american diet RED MEAT. I’ve been meat free for nine months. A great documentary “Food Inc.” help me kick the meat habit.
