We wonder if athletes and celebrities are aware that their milk mustaches come with up to 20 chemicals in them?!  Scientists have shown that a cocktail of at least 20 painkillers, antibiotics, and growth hormones are present in most glasses of milk.

Most of the chemicals that were found in milk by the researchers were used on dairy farms to treat illnesses in cows.  Even though the doses found were minuscule, it illuminates the pervasiveness of chemicals in the food chain.

Researchers looked at cow, goat, and human breast milk and found chemicals in all of the samples of milk.  The Spanish-Moroccan team investigated 20 samples and believe most of the chemicals were either injected into cows in the form of growth inhibitors or through contamination on farms.

Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the research team revealed that cow’s milk contained traces of anti-inflammatory drugs niflumic acid, mefenamic acid and ketoprofen––painkillers that are used for animals and people.

Lead scientist Dr. Evaristo Ballesteros feels his team’s technique can help countries keep a wide variety of their food safe. Ballesteros claims: “Food quality control laboratories could use this new tool to detect these drugs before they enter the food chain. This would raise consumers’ awareness and give them the knowledge that food is… harmless, pure, genuine, beneficial to health and free of toxic residues.”

Human breast milk contained traces of painkillers ibuprofen and naproxen, along with the antibiotic triclosan and hormones.

  1. I gave up milk a long time ago because of the concern about pathogens in the supply. I glad to see some scientist have taken up this cause, protecting the little people. Right ON!

  2. This a shame! I can’t and dont want toimagine what is in our milk here n America

  3. If you think this is bad just imagine what is in your water; that is why I won’t give up dairy bc if you don’t get it from one things you’ll get it from another. I do however only consume milk and dairy products from grass fed, free range, antibiotic/ hormone free cows.
