The moment we’ve all been waiting for: Jennifer Hudson, Black America’s sweetheart, is set to publish a tell-all memoir about her weight-loss journey. After the tragic murder of her family, she’s been unstoppable with a chart-breaking album, first child, healthier figure, and now, she’ll add a sure-to-be bestselling book.

From a size 16 to 6, she credits Weight Watchers and a personal trainer for her amazing transformation. However, she cites the birth of her son as the true catalyst for change. As a mother and public figure, she’s ready to set a healthy example for both her son and the world.

From the publisher’s news release via the LA Times:

The book … will chronicle Hudson’s experience growing up in an environment where healthy living was not a priority, to dealing with talk of her weight as she competed on American Idol and won her first Oscar, to her eventual decision to get healthy after the birth of her son, and her success losing weight with the help of Weight Watchers. Now, 80 pounds lighter, Hudson wants to inspire anyone coping with weight issues, share some of her own best tips for losing and maintaining weight loss, fitting in exercise and keeping it fun and much more.

While a popular gossip site claimed “publishers would rather try to make money from the Hudson Family murders than J.Hud’s slimmy trimmy-dom,” clearly Hudson had the last say.  Set to be published by Dutton in 2012, the book surely will be a success without undermining Hudson’s sense of privacy about her familial matters. Between Hudson’s weight-loss journey, inspiration from her first-born son, and improved lifestyle, there is plenty to read and captivate our attention.

  1. I’m excited. I love me some J. Hud. I’m not sure if I’ll read it though…

  2. I think it’s [the book] interesting, because she’s lost so much weight. But on the other hand, she’s a celebrity who has the money and the help to really manage her weight and exercise regime. Who the hell knows who her personal trainer was/is and how much she paid him for her services? Also, I think weight-loss books play into this idea that anyone who is overweight can simply lose it with the right amount of dieting/nutrition, exercise and determination. That’s not to say that women (and men) shouldn’t want to lose weight if they so choose, but I’m afraid of this idea that thinner equals better.

But I guess we’ll see what mentality Hudson takes in her book in regards to why she chose to lose weight because healthy doesn’t equal thin either.

  3. she lost weight because she can and it’s her body, what’s so hard to understand about that. She doesn’t owe you overweight bitches anything !

  4. What is it with black women in particular frowning upon another sister deciding to change her lifestyle and eating habits?

There is NOTHING healthy nor sexy about being extremely overweight, it’s not being mean or harsh it’s the truth.

    • @Norma: You’re “harsh truth” is YOURS only! Please let’s always understand that everybody’s journey is unique and we should always refrain from scapegoating and shaming larger people. Compassion will help more than shaming…

  5. I thought she looked better just a little thicker then she was now. To each his own.

  6. she looks AMAZING!!! look at that smile! look at her GLOW!!! she is ROCKING it! we can either make excuses or we can do the work and make changes. i don’t have much money at all. i am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother to three children. my husband is the only income and it is very modest. what i DO have is a determination to GET the life i want. to quit sitting on the couch. to quit stuffing my emotions with food. to quit letting people or situations or past circumstances hold me back and make me feel like a victim. down 64lbs with eating healthy and working my ass off! no personal trainers. no fancy equipment. are there SOME exceptions to the rule, possibly, but very VERY few will not see results when they put forth consistent and committed effort.

  7. Hmmm. Maybe its too soon for her to write a book about weight loss/ healthy lifestyle if it is not supported by expertise, or other women that have kept weight off sucessfully.

She RESENTLY lost all of her excess weight. Of corse this was no easy task and i am proud of her, but she still has to maintain her weight and lifestyle daily. Many people fall off the wagon and gain the weight back after a short period of time, depending on their methods. I would really hope that she wouldn’t fall into that trap.

On the flip side I understand that her book would serve as great inspiration, because JHud is a young Black woman with a public platform. Count how many healthy lifestyle/ weight loss books one can pick up at B&N by any black woman, let alone any woman of color. Perhaps it can help dismantle some stereotypes (sp), and social behaviors that need to die.

Someone upthread stated a mantra. “Skinny don’t equal healthy”. I have been hearing this forever. It sounds like a crutch to me, and an excuse to NOT try to be healthy and fit, which I believe are very basic quality of life issues.

  8. Well I think whatever it took to make her feel good inside, congratulations!! Jennifer looks really pretty… The only thing I’d like to see is another look that wasn’t so ” Kim K” but more “Michelle O”
