How long have you been vegan? And what inspired your journey?

I started on my journey October 1, 2010. It started as a “30 Day Raw Food Challenge” and within 15 days of the challenge I felt so alive that I decided that there was no way that I could go back to my old way of eating. Also during the challenge I began reading books about vegan lifestyles. One in particular was The China Study. After reading that book, I officially decided that being a vegan was right for me.

Has veganism enhanced your health? Why or why not?

To say the least. I had been on medication for High Blood Pressure for over 20 years. I had accepted the fact that it was a hereditary condition and I would be on medications forever…not so. I now realize that the foods that we eat can either heal us or make us sick. I have decided to heal myself with the foods that I eat. I no longer need medication to control my blood pressure.

In retrospect, how do you feel about meat? Or do you have any thoughts on America’s meat industry?

Personally, I have chosen to give up all animal products (meat, dairy etc). We are led to believe that we need meat for protein and that is not so. I feel that there is a lot of misinformation being given to the public.

Was there a community of black women that helped you along your meatless journey? And if not, what are you doing to change this for others?

There was definitely a black woman who helped with with my journey, Karen Cooper. She lead me as I began my vegan/rawfood journey by providing me with information, knowledge and delicious recipes to help me along the way. She is amazing! I have started my blog along with my Facebook page to try and get the word out about Eating to Live!
