A recent study conducted by the International Food Information Council discovered that while 55 percent of people thought they are overweight only 34 percent actually were. But only 8 percent considered themselves obese but 30 percent were. So, it seems like most people think they’re bigger than they actually are but those that are in serious danger are clueless that their extra pounds are more than just baby fat and can lead to an early grave.

Please remember that your weight doesn’t define who you are but it can determine how healthy you are. If you’re in denial of your status as an overweight or obese person, similar to HIV status, you’re putting your health at risk. And, you’re likely not doing something about a current or potential problem like Diabetes or high blood pressure.

Obese is a daunting word and it makes sense why no one would want to classify themselves as such. And you also don’t have to be 500 pounds to be considered obese. By definition an adult who has a body mass index over 30 is obese and one who has a BMI between 25 and 29 is overweight. But half of the battle is recognition. You have to realize there’s a problem in order to seek out the solution.

If you don’t have one already, purchase an inexpensive scale and weigh yourself regularly to keep tabs on the number. The next time you step on the scale think about if your weight is proportional to your height and frame and see if your thoughts about your weight match reality. Make an appointment with your doctor if you think your weight’s become a burden on your health and make it your business to develop a plan to lower your weight and raise your life expectancy.
